20. Icarus
[[Accidental Voice Post]]

*loud obnoxious singing can be heard, and the lyrics are garbled and may not be quite right*

"Sail on sail on, I will rise each day to meet the dawn,
so high, so high, I find my freedom flying high!
Without my wings you know I'd surely die,
I climb the mountains of the skiiiis!
-- GAH!!!"

*
equally loud crash can be heard, followed by yelling, yowling, and the flapping of wings*

"Icarus! Leave Mister alone! No! MISTER! STOP TRYING TO EAT HIM!!!!"

*finally all goes quiet, until-*

"BOB!!!! IS THERE A WAY TO KEEP BIRDS AND CATS FROM TRYING TO EAT EACH OTHER???? "

[[Harry acquired an owl in Italy; a rather ambitious barn owl that keeps trying to eat his cat, Mister. He named the owl Icarus, after the overly-ambitious human who built wings of wax and flew too close to the sun]]

Marta Lualdi: shock!swallow_waltz on July 21st, 2009 12:22 am (UTC)
Is... everything okay?
Harry Dresden: Prayerstage_wizard on July 21st, 2009 12:57 am (UTC)
uh... yeah. *hasty scribble, journal page reflects feathers and cat cur* Just a little disagreement between species.
Marta Lualdi: weep!swallow_waltz on July 21st, 2009 01:17 am (UTC)
It sounded like more than just a little disagreement...

Also... was that you singing?
Harry Dresden: Ididn'tdoitstage_wizard on July 21st, 2009 01:21 am (UTC)
Well, when an owl tries eating a cat, things tend to happen.

*offended/indignant/self-conscious*
Yeah. Anything wrong with that?
Marta Lualdi: talking.swallow_waltz on July 21st, 2009 07:40 am (UTC)
No... It was just loud. Your voice isn't bad, though.
Harry Dresden: Incognitostage_wizard on July 21st, 2009 01:49 pm (UTC)
*slightly mollified*

Oh. I didn't mean to leave the voice thing-a-ma-jig on. Though since you're interested, any ideas on how to keep an owl from eating a cat? Or trying to anyway.... *trailed off line*

That bird is a few straws short of a nest. Don't even know why I got him.
Marta Lualdi: weep!swallow_waltz on July 21st, 2009 05:06 pm (UTC)
Well... I don't know too much about animals, but... Maybe you should just keep him full? That way, he won't be hungry and hopefully he won't go after your cat.

Unless, of course, he's going after your cat on a full stomach, in which case... I have no idea.
Harry Dresden: Braindeadstage_wizard on July 23rd, 2009 05:32 am (UTC)
Yeah. No idea. This is a tiny barn owl verses a huge 30lb monster of a cat. Don't know what the damn thing is thinking. I've taken to leaving him in his cage, but then he puts up a racket worthy of the World Cup.
Marta Lualdi: weep!swallow_waltz on July 23rd, 2009 05:33 am (UTC)
At... least you'd have a noisemaker for the World Cup that way.
Harry Dresdenstage_wizard on July 23rd, 2009 05:53 am (UTC)
Heh, very true. Stick his cage on a stick and wave him around like a banner. Certainly would get noticed. Dunno if it would be considered 'team spirit' though.
Marta Lualdi: smile.swallow_waltz on July 23rd, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
Well, if you decorated the cage with your team's colors, it could be considered some sort of team spirit, right?

I'm Marta, by the way. I hope your owl stops trying to eat your cat soon.
Harry Dresden: Grinstage_wizard on July 24th, 2009 04:07 am (UTC)
I guess so.

It would be worlds easier to get them to stop with magic. Just a mild warding spell around each of them to repel physical attacks....

*suddenly remembers his manners* I'm Harry Dresden, nice to meet you. Which house and year are you in?
Marta Lualdi: smile.swallow_waltz on July 24th, 2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
Yeah... And it wouldn't be too horribly difficult, either, I don't think.

I'm a Gryffindor fifth. What about you?
Harry Dresden: HDWizardstage_wizard on July 25th, 2009 08:32 am (UTC)
Ravenclaw, going into 6th. I don't think I've seen you around school all that much.
Marta Lualdi: talking.swallow_waltz on July 26th, 2009 08:08 pm (UTC)
I tend to kinda fly under the radar. I haven't see you around much, either!

Are you looking forward to being a 6th year?
Harry Dresden: Grinstage_wizard on July 29th, 2009 07:36 am (UTC)
Oh yeah, it sounds like great fun. I hear you get to learn human-animal transfiguration later on in 6th. Or at least that's what I've heard from older students.

I tend to stay in the Ravenclaw common room or the Library, or sometimes the grounds if there's nice weather. It's easier to think and do homework that way.
Bob Bainbridge: 24bobthewizard on August 3rd, 2009 08:42 am (UTC)
*writing from the teacher conference site, may or may not be very unsuccessfully trying not to smile*

Mister hasn't taken kindly to the new arrival, then?
Harry Dresden: Anti-gravitystage_wizard on August 3rd, 2009 08:39 pm (UTC)
No. I swear, there's something wrong with that bird. Owls should not try to eat cats! He's not JUST attacking, he makes that sound he usually makes when he wants a mouse.

Hells bells why can't I ever find a normal pet?
Bob Bainbridge: 8bobthewizard on August 3rd, 2009 08:58 pm (UTC)
Try painting Mister green. Perhaps then the owl will mistake him for a gecko instead.
Harry Dresden: Dumbasstage_wizard on August 3rd, 2009 09:52 pm (UTC)
... That's not funny, Bob.
Bob Bainbridge: 3bobthewizard on August 3rd, 2009 10:19 pm (UTC)
Isn't it? I won't quit my day job, then.

A mild shock charm, perhaps? It would have the side effect of making Mister's hair stand on end, but the extra ions in his vicinity should deter your owl.
Harry Dresden: HDWizardstage_wizard on August 7th, 2009 11:01 pm (UTC)
I was thinking a localized warding spell. Maybe a mild repellent compulsion built in.... It'll have to wait until I can actually use magic again, but I suppose I could start researching.....
Bob Bainbridge: 5bobthewizard on August 9th, 2009 06:10 am (UTC)
True, true. Or unless there should happen to be a friendly wizard in the vicinity.

By all means, do so. *can hardly wait to check his work ^^*
Harry Dresden: Grinstage_wizard on August 10th, 2009 01:09 am (UTC)
I'll have to figure out a way to modify one of the defensive warding spells against owls so it can be applied to a living being rather than a specific location.... If I figure it out I could have Tom the barkeep do the casting....

*trails off in scribbles of arcane runes and complicated equations that probably have a few minor errors*
Bob Bainbridge: 4bobthewizard on August 10th, 2009 10:11 am (UTC)
Hm. A tricky proposition; you'll definitely need a material sample to key ward to bird. A few talon clippings would do it.... good, good, now take a closer look at the morphology of the third asset.... *and on he goes, frequently pausing to let Harry figure things out himself*
Harry Dresden: Magicstage_wizard on August 12th, 2009 08:29 pm (UTC)
*nod, nod* I already got some feathers from him, and some fur from Mister, just in case.

*keeps scribbling the work out in the journal, pausing to correct things Bob points out, or he spots himself*
